Assault and Break and Enter

An assualt during a break-in early this morning. The incident happened shortly after 1:45 on Carleton Street where a 43 year old man broke into a womens apartment with a weapon and assaulted her.
Police say the man was arrested and released. The woman's injuries are not serious.

Robbery in Graveyard

A 21 year old man claims he was robbed by two men uptown last night in the Loyalist Buriel Grounds. Police say a 28 year old man was caught coming out of the graveyard and has been charged. The man who was robbed did not have serious injuries.

Aids Walk

As the fight continues to find a cure, supporters and those suffering with the disease are expected to take part in the Annual Aids Walk today. It's to raise cash for those suffering with the disease and bring attention to the fight many continue to deal with on a daily basis. Julie Dingwell with Aids Saint John tells CHSJ News, it's important for everyone to remember that HIV doesn't discriminate:

Trash Deal

The town of Rothesay has locked up a garbage collection deal with Dominion Refuse Collectors. Town council has awarded a four year garbage collection and transportation contract to the company for 885 thousand dollars. The only other bidder was Fero Waste and Recycling for 1.8 million dollars--and--the engineers estimate was 1.05 million.

The contract runs from 2010 until the end of 2013 with the option of extending the deal another two years after that for 450 thousand dollars.

Food for Romero

A garden project at the Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission generated a truck load of food for Romero House.
General Manager Mark MacLeod says they used their own compost to grow the vegetables and the staff at Romero House were thrilled with the donation.

MacLeod says a summer student and some other staff members maintained the 70-feet by 60-feet garden all summer.

Renforth Wharf Reno Postponed

Only a portion of the remaining renovation work at the Renforth Wharf will be finished this year. Rothesay town council has turned down the only bid for a construction tender because the cost was too high. Fundy Engineering offered to do the job for 358 thousand dollars.
Instead, council is re-tendering a portion of the project--the concrete deck--with hopes to finish the redi rock wall at a later date.

H1N1 Shots on the Way

The Department of Health will roll out the first shots of pandemic HINI vaccination the first week of November. At a cost of over $17 million dollars, it's hoped the shot will prevent the flu from spreading rapidly with current projections indicating a third of the work force could get sick. Even though the shot is on a voluntary basis, Health Minister Mary Schryer is encouraging everyone to get it:

Schryer says the high risk groups which include those who are pregnant to get the shot.
