The Trust took over ownership of the project last July and began a major project of removing culverts from Henderson Brook.

Cherry Brook Zoo Says It Needs Stable Funding To Be Accredited

Cherry Brook Zoo is making the rounds asking municipal councils in Greater Saint John for funding as it seeks to be accredited.

The zoo's Director Linda Collrin says Cherry Brook needs stable year to year funding for that to happen and claims 150 thousand dollars in total municipal funding would be enough. She made her pitch to Quispamsis town council which referred the request to its finance committee. The town gave the zoo 5 thousand dollars this year. The city gave the largest amount ........60 thousand dollars.

Collrin points out the zoo raised over 300 thousand dollars so it's not depending solely on the public purse. The zoo is holding a Scary Brook Zoo fundraiser this weekend for young people prior to Halloween.

Conservation Council Denounces Federal Approval Of Pesticide

The Conservation Council is raising the alarm bells over federal approval being given for use of the pesticide "Alpha Max" to kill sea lice at salmon farms in the province.

Matt Abbott of the Conservation Council tells CHSJ News Environment Canada had been concerned about its use and what sort of effect it will have on the marine life in the Bay of Fundy. Abbott complains about having difficulty in getting information about the pesticide prior to its approval.

He also claims the sea lice infestation is a sign of the unsustainability of aqualculture. Abbott charges the pesticides being used in aquaculture are posing a threat to the multi-million dollar traditional fishing economy of coastal communities.

Cruise Ship Passengers Quarantined After Getting Sick

Something like 49 people out of more than 3000 on board the Caribbean Princess which will be docking in Saint John this morning have come down with what is described as a flu-like gastrointestinal virus.

They will be quarantined and have to stay on board. Harbourmaster Captain John McCann tells CHSJ News Health Canada is well aware of the situation as is Public Health. Not all of the passengers can be screened so tourism operators in the city have been given the heads up to take precautions.

Tourism operator Beth Kelly Hatt, owner of Aquila Tours, says there are risk management procedures in place whenever something like this happens, especially on a ship where illness can easily spread. If about 15 per cent of passengers were sick, the ship would not be allowed to tie up.

There may be two candidates running for Carl Killen's vacant seat around the horseshoe at Common Council.
John Campbell is considering a municipal run.

Campbell tells CHSJ News says many people have told him it's the logical next step after running unsucessfully in Saint John Harbour as an independent candidate.

Small business owner Anne Marie Mullen, who has also given provincial politicics a try, has confirmed she is running for the seat at Council after being urged to do so by people in the riding.

Campbell says he decide for sure over the next couple of days.

December 13th is the unofficial byelection date.
