Chief Encouraging People To Lock It and Pocket Your Keys

It's police week in the city again, and the force is kicking off a public awareness campaign called Lock-it and Pocket. Chief Bill Reid tells CHSJ News the campaign is about educating the public to lock their cars and leave their valuables at home so there will be less likelihood of theft.

He tells us vehicle theft is a crime of opportunity and often happens because people leave their vehicles unlocked, theirs get in, find a spare key and take the vehicle.

Reid says the force is also using Police Week to promote their crime mapping technology to the public. It's an online tool that allows citizens to see where crimes have taken place in their neighbourhood, so they can be more aware of their surroundings.
