City Wins Energy Efficiency Award

This year's Premier's Award for Energy Efficiency going to the port city. Saint John picking up the energy efficiency award in the commercial sector category.

The city adopted a Municipal Energy Efficiency Program in 1996 with the goal of reducing energy consumption by 25 per cent by 2011.

As of 2007, the program was saving the city 1.2 million dollars annually.

Mayor Ivan Court says it is rewarding to be honoured and Saint John will continue to lead the way as a sustainable community.

Spring Weight Restrictions Come Off Today

As of midnight tonight, you're allowed to put as much weight on your truck as you like.

The province lifting spring weight restrictions on vehicles a week early to make it the same day in both southern and northern New Brunswick.

Transportation Minister Claude Williams says a few roads may still have travel restrictions because of heavy rains or flooding.

A list of affected routes can be found on the department of transportation's website.

Rothesay Still Undecided On Sports Facility

Rothesay council still trying to decide whether to build a new multi-purpose sports facility in the area or a new ice surface.

Mayor Bill Bishop tells CHSJ News the recreation committee has done up a report but the project is still being looked into.

He says staff are now trying to figure out where the proper place for it would be and trying to get a handle on cost.

Bishop says the possibility of Saint John putting a field house at Exhibition Park won't have any affect on Council's decision.

He says if Rothesay does decide to build a sports complex it will be more for basket ball, volley ball and seniors than for sports that require artificial turf.

Boys and Girls Club Launches Junior Police Academy

The Saint John Police Force and the local Boys and Girls Club starting a new program that is the first of its kind in North America.

Debbie Cooper with the Boys and Girls Club tells CHSJ News it's called the Junior Police Academy, and the goal is to help turn some of the city's youth around while getting them involved in the community.

Cooper says during the 3 year program the youth involved will recieve the same kind of training that someone gets when they want to go into the police force, re-vamped so it is appropriate for 10-13 year olds.

Land Development Still On Airport's Radar

Four hundred acres- that's how much land the Saint John Airport Authority has to develop around their terminal building.

President Bernie LeBlanc tells CHSJ News key development for them would be someone who needs access to a runway, so a restaurant, a hotel, even a business park.

LeBlanc says at the moment land development at the airport stands on getting the right tenant at the right time.

Dramatic Rescue in Saint John Harbour

A dramatic rescue yesterday afternoon by city police and fire crews.

A man plunging over the side of the Harbour Bridge and into the murky water below.

Police and fire lined the waterfront eyeballing the man in order to guide the Coast Guard rescue boat.

The swift current pulling the man down the river and into the harbour where he was located near Water Street.

Crews able to launch a boat and pull the man from the water with a rope and a life ring, before transferring him to the Saint John Regional Hospital.

City police say the Harbor Bridge was closed for about a half an hour because of the situation.

They estimate the man was in the water for about fifteen minutes before crews could reach him.
