NBCC To Official Open New "E" Building

We'll soon get a look at the new E-building at the Saint John campus of the New Brunswick Community College.

An official opening and media tour takes place tomorrow on Grandview Avenue with the school's President and CEO Marilyn Luscombe on hand along with Tourism Minister Trevor Holder and Saint John MP Rodney Weston.
 

Alward Tories Change Their Tune On Studies

The Province has had a change of heart.    They will release a public health report in its entirety on the shale gas industry.

Environment Minister Bruce Fitch says the report by Doctor Eilish Cleary, the chief medical officer of health, will be released along with a report by University of Moncton biologist Louis LaPierre, who gathered input on proposed shale gas regulations.

Fitch says they have concluded there is no trouble to release both reports and they will do it on October 15th.

Cleary examined the potential health impacts of the shale gas industry.

Before today, the government had only committed to releasing some of her report.

Man Hurt Outside Fredericton Bar Dies In Saint John


A 54-year-old man hurt outside a Fredericton bar last weekend has died at the Regional Hospital in Saint John. 

Fredericton Police Constable Danielle Carmichael says Walter Wheeler died late last night.
   
Earlier this week, police asked for informatin from anyone who may have seen the incident near the Twenty/20 Club on Regent Street early Saturday morning.

Boudreau Raises More Questions About Cabinet Shuffle

Rookie MLA Ted Flemming will soon be Health Minister and many are asking if putting a lawyer in this post means cuts are coming.

Interim Liberal Leader Victor Boudreau tells CHSJ News the Tories should learn from the Dr. Parott fiasco that government should be transparent and to consult.

Boudreau wonders whether Ted Flemming will deliver the 3T MRI for Saint John as promised.

Man In Court For Attack On Jogger

Nathan Daniel Dean of Saint John appearing in court this afternoon and pleading not guilty in connection with a sexual assault on a woman jogging in Rockwood Park. Dean, who is 27, stands accused of masking his face with pantyhose before threatening the woman with a knife.

She managed to get away from her attacker uninjured before calling police.

Dean's bail hearing will be set on Tuesday.

Big Signing For The Millrats

The Saint John Mill Rats have signed a former member of the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. Antonio Anderson joins his brother Anthony, who was the Mill Rats leading scorer last season. Mill Rats Coach David Cooper says Antonio brings a lot to the table.

He says they're excited because Antonio Anderson is known as a defender and that's what they need to get to the next level.

Antonio played his college ball at the University of Memphis under legendary coach John Calipari.

Home Invasion On The West Side

Scanty details about a home invasion on the city's West Side occurring in the early morning hours....

Sergeant Jay Henderson of the city police force tells CHSJ News 2 men busted into a home on Queen Street West shortly before 4am.

Nothing is believed to have been stolen and the men fled on foot after the homeowner called police. Henderson says they're currently looking into the matter.

Charge Laid in Harbour View High Assault

A 17 year old will be appearing in youth court after an incident at Harbour View High...a student was taken to hospital after being hit in the head with a baton by another teenager.

The call coming in to city police shortly after 1pm. The suspect was apprehended by police a short time later and has since been charged with assault with a weapon.

Soup Kitchen Gets Award But Still Needs Help

The results are in...and Romero House is getting the Big Heart Award from the Board of Trade for its work providing hot meals seven days a week to needy people in Saint John. 

Romero House founder Carolyn McNulty tells CHSJ News the soup kitchen relies on volunteers and donors to do its work for the past 30 years--and the donations aren't coming in like they used to, as their long-term donors get older.

McNulty says while the award is great what the soup kitchen really needs is money to help meet its $20,000 per month operating costs. As well, they're in desperate need of ingredients for soup, warm clothing for winter, and other basics.

Missing Teenager From Burtt's Corner Found

The missing 17-year-old boy from Burtts Corner, N.B. has returned home safely.

District 2 RCMP received word that the teen was back home around 9:00 p.m. yesterday after last being seen on Monday.

Refinery Probe May Take Up To 3-Months


It appears an investigation into last week's explosion at the Irving Refinery may take as long as a couple of months to complete -- that's the word from WorkSafe N-B spokesperson Dino Scichilone who says it will focus on safety and integrity issues - the agency launched its probe after a worker suffered cuts to the face when he was knocked to the ground by the force of the explosion - the contract worker was taken to hospital to be checked out.
The explosion apparently resulted after pressure built up in a small tank while it was being filled -- the build up blew the top of the tank off but no fire resulted.
The big bang shook houses and rattled residents in nearby Champlain Heights.

An outstanding gala for outstanding local businesses--the Board of Trade is honouring local entrepreneurs at its 28th annual awards gala. Emerging Enterprise Winner Greg Hemmings of Hemmings House tells CHSJ News they've grown a lot since they first started up, with television shows airing in over 60 countries and a strong foothold in the international market.

Young Entrepreneur winner Dave Wolpin bought Kredls at the age of 22 and he chalks up his success to going back to basics, rather than marketing food with fancy organic labels.


Innovatia, Credit Counselling Services of Atlantic Canada, Master Promotions and Romero House all received accolades, as well.

Woman Attacked In Rockwood Park

City Police making an arrest, after a woman, while out jogging at Lily Lake in Rockwood Park around 7 last night was confronted by a man wearing pantyhose on his head who jumped out of the woods and threatened her with a knife.

Police tell CHSJ News she managed to fight off her attacker and was not injured. 

After getting the call, Police formed a perimeter around the park and one man, described as being in his 30's, was later arrested at the Matthews Lane exit.

Self Serve Regular Way Up In Price

Prepare for pain at the pumps today.
 

The price of regular self-serve in the city went from $1.31.4 to $1.38 a litre after the weekly setting with diesel also rising by almost two cents a litre to $1.35.8.

Heating oil is up by almost 2 cents with a maximum price of $1.18.9 a litre and propane actually is less with a max that can be charged of 93.8 cents a litre.
 

Kevin McCann of Wilson Fuels tells CHSJ News  he expects prices will go down as the market settles.
