Another Delay In Case Of Rooming House Death

The date has, yet again, been pushed forward in the case of a local man charged in the death of 66 year-old Duncan MacDonald.

35 year-old Nicholas Logan and MacDonald were living at a rooming house on the corner of Duke and Prince William, where MacDonald was seriously injured in an incident on March 16. He died in hospital on April 10.

Logan has undergone mental assessments in Restigouche and received a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, suggesting he won't be held criminally responsible for his actions. When Logan appeared in mid-June, the case was delayed, as the court was awaiting forensic evidence before it could proceed.

He will be back in court on August 13.

Police Hosting Skateboard & BMX Competition

Skateboards and BMXers will be showcasing what they can do on a set of wheels in an upcoming competition in the valley.

The second annual Rothesay Regional Police's Skateboard & BMX competition is taking place later this summer.

Constable Krystal Daley tells CHSJ News when the skateboard park was built last year, there were concerns from parents and skateboarders about older youth. She says they said they felt like some of the younger skateboarders were intimidated by them, and there were concerns surrounding illegal substances.

They created the competition as a way of addressing these issues and teach safety.

Daley says one of their summer students and a cadet from the Atlantic Police Academy named Ryan Cormier are the ones organizing and running the competition. It's happening on August 10 at the Quispamsis skateboard park. It's for anyone aged 5-18, and it's free. Registration forms are located at Shred Board Shop, the Town of Quispamsis and the RRPF.

Food And Clothing Bank Low On Supplies

The list of names of those in need is longer than usual at a local food and clothing bank.

Samantha Brewer of the Lakewood Head Start Association tells CHSJ News they're hosting a food drive in order to stock their shelves. She says they've experienced rise in the need for food over the last two years, and their supplies are getting low.

Brewer says their clientele is generally older people, and they've noticed many people seem to be out of work and needing help.

The drive is coinciding with a parade coming as part of Old Home Week in St. Martin's on July 27. Brewer says they're encouraging people to bring food to the parade and volunteers from the food and clothing bank will come and pick those up.

The chairman of the Grace Foundation says they are not looking for a refund of a 20-thousand-dollar speaking fee from Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau has offered to reimburse any group that was dissatisfied with his paid speeches.

A foundation board member asked for a refund in March because the City event lost money.
