Program Teaches Seniors To Protect Themselves

Seniors are a prime target for fraudsters, but police in Rothesay are teaching some how to spot a scam.

Their third installment of the six-week Seniors Police Academy starts on October 8 and educates them on fraud prevention, traffic safety, internet safety, and elder abuse.

Constable Krystal Daley tells CHSJ News they hope the people who go to the academy take what they learn and share it with others. She says the more information that's out there, the better.

They're now accepting registration for the program. There's no cost to participate but space is limited. To sign up, call Constable Daley at 849-5791 or e-mail her krystal.daley@nbpolice.ca.

One Week Left To Vote For The City Market

Saint Johners already know the City Market is pretty great--but there's a chance to make that official by voting in the Market as one of the Great Places in Canada designated by the national institute of city planners.

The Market's up for the designation again this year against such stiff competition as the Rideau Canal, the Mcadam train station, and Toronto's Withrow Park. Ken Forrest is on the committee and he tells CHSJ News it's a big honor.

The Cape Forchu Lighthouse in Yarmouth won in the category last year. To vote, visit their website here

PotashCorp Contemplates New Road

PotashCorp is looking at building a new access road from the Causeway to the potash terminal along with an expansion of the railway holding yard.

General Manager Stewart Brown says they're in the engineering stage and says if they're thinking optimistically, construction would start in late 2014 or early 2015. Brown says the new road would cut down on the heavy truck traffic on Crowne Street.

Brown says there's an expanding market for potash because every year the world's population grows, and the demand for food, and consequently, fertilizer grows with it.

Uptown Saint John Reacts To Paramount Demolition

"Disappointing"......That's the reaction of the President of Uptown Saint John to the start of demolition at the old Paramount Theatre in King Square.

Uptown Saint John made a concerted effort to get enough public and financial support to see the theatre transformed to another use but failed.

Alexander is hopeful the development of the Coast Guard site by Market Square will act as a catalyst to spur further development in the uptown. He says there's alot of energy in that part of the city these days.

Many residents in different areas of Quispamsis have concerns over the speed limits in their neighbourhood.

Director of Engineering Gary Losier tells CHSJ News it all comes back to the town being a residential community and concerns pop up about traffic and speed when the school year starts.

He says they have to look at whether it's an actual issue or is it a perception adding all of the requests come to council which includes traffic monitoring.

No less for four requests for traffic calming measures came before Quispam council last night.

Work To Demolish Paramount Starts Today

Work to demolish the iconic Paramount Theatre is beginning today, according to owner Paul Daeres.

Crews could be seen taking down the chimney of the iconic uptown theatre, which has been permitted to fall into disrepair since it closed its doors in the early 2000s. The building has been vacant since 2005.

Daeres says the concrete construction presents a particular challenge in terms of demolition, saying the building was "built to last." Crews will be working to take the roof and supports down for by hand for the thirty days before excavators are brought in at the end of the month.

The 1947 building is set to be demolished by November. Deares says a parking lot will take its place.

When MacDougall bought the theatre back in the 1980s the main stage venue in Saint John was Saint John High School. He says he fully anticipates the theatre to be going strong in another 100 years.
