St. Andrew's Society and City Pub Host Scottish Rink


A pile of boisterous fans piling into a tiny Saint John bar to celebrate Scotland's curling team.

The reception hosted by the St. Andrew's Society and Pete's Pub where attendees heard some bagpipes and ate some haggis.


CHSJ News asked Team Scotland skip Kerry Barr how her team likes the ice at Harbour Station.

She says the ice is great describing it as quick and straighter than they expected but really good.

Barr says its her first visit to Saint John and New Brunswick adding everyone has been lovely.
 

Team Scotland faces the US tomorrow afternoon at Harbour Station.

Canada Sitting 8 and 1 after Draw 13



In draw 13 at the Ford World Women's Curling Championship, Canada beat South Korean 10-3 to improve to 8 and 1.  

Sweden got by Scotland 8-7,  Russia beat Denmark 7-4 and the Czech Republic hammered Latvia 10-2.

Rachel Homan's Team Canada rink leads the standings at 8 and 1.


Sweden and Switzerland are next at 7 and 1 and those teams are playing tonight at 730 in Draw 14 at Harbour Station.

Deal Aims To Protect Youth Online


The province signing an agreement to provide more protection for kids and teens online.

Through an agreement with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, public schools will incorporate new resources to increase awareness among kids and teens about the potential dangers of exploitation when they go online.

Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Marie-Claude Blais calls the agreement an important step in the ongoing work the province is doing to protect young New Brunswickers from those who prey on youth online.

New Play Promises Unique Look At The Creative Process

A new two-character play set in the 1950s will be attracting theatre-goers from tomorrow through Saturday at the Imperial.

"Red" stars Stephen Tobias and Caleb Cosman playing the painter Mark Rothko and his assistant as Rothko accepts the biggest commission in the history of modern art.

Artistic Director Caleb Marshall tells CHSJ News the story would appeal to anyone who's interested in painting, or in the creative process in general.
The play runs from tonight, March 19 2014 to Saturday March 22 2014 at the Imperial Theatre.

Watch Out For This Scam In Charlotte County

The West District RCMP is warning St. George, Blacks Harbour, and other Charlotte County residents about a telephone scam currently being reported in the area.

Fraudsters are contacting people at home pretending to be Microsoft or Windows employees, telling you your computer has a virus, that they need to perform an important update. They may request payment for this "service" by asking you to provide banking or credit card information. This can result in money being stolen from you and viruses added to your computer.

If you or a loved one may have been a victim of this type of fraud, please contact local police.

Canada Wins Morning Match At Curling Championship

Canada improving to 7 and 1 at the Ford World Women's Curling championship with a 7-5 win over Germany. Switzerland is also at 7 and 1 after downing Scotland 10-5. 

The M-C for the tournament, Stewart Brown tells CHSJ News there have been a lot of surprises such as when the Koreans knocked off the Swiss who were unbeaten. 

Canada plays the Koreans at 2:30. 

Brown says the curlers love Saint John and he calls Harbour Station an amazing venue. He predicts the playoffs which will take place after the round robin ends will be nail biters because the teams are so evenly matched.


Shots Fired In The North End

The Saint John Police Force Major Crime Unit is investigating shots fired at a home in the North End of Saint John around 5 am.

A 29 year old man has been arrested and is facing several weapons related charges.  The gun believed to be used has been recovered and no injuries have been reported.

He's set make a provincial court appearance this afternoon to answer to the weapons charges as well as other Criminal Code Charges.

Gas Tax Money Helping To Pay For New Arena In Rothesay

Rothesay Arena will be turned into a fieldhouse that will be used for volleyball and basketball after a new arena is built nearby at a cost of 13 million dollars divided equally between the town, province and federal government. 

Mayor Bill Bishop says there will be a walking track included as well as an ice rink when the new arena opens in 2015. 

Saint John M-P Rodney Weston says funding is coming from the enhanced municipal gas tax fund.
 

Weston says he has met with Mayor Mel Norton about how the city can get money from this same fund to construct a Fourplex.

Concern Over Possibility Of Flooding In Quispamsis

Works crews in Quispamsis are preparing for the worst with the onset of spring. 

The town's Engineering Director Gary Losier tells CHSJ News the situation with potholes will be, in his words, "horrific".
 

Losier is also worried about flooding because of all the snow that's on the ground, especially if we get heavy spring rains but even without a lot of rain, he warns there could very well be flooding.




Fredericton Area Businessman Fined For Evading Taxes

A businessman from Upper Kingsclear, Michael Bruce Newman, has been fined more than 138 thousand dollars in Fredericton after pleading guilty to nine tax evasion charges. 

Newman evaded personal income taxes totaling 99 thousand dollars for the 2007 to 2009 tax years. He also evaded over 39 thousand dollars HST between September of 2007 and December of 2009.
 

A Canada Revenue Agency investigation revealing he didn’t report any business income or HST during these years. 

Newman operated a consulting business and also acted as a sub-contractor. He was hired to supply tandem trucks, tractor trailers, excavators and survey crews on construction sites.

Fluoride Motion Struck Down

Love it or hate it--common council has voted to remove fluoride from our drinking water, and we won't be asking the province to examine the amount of money to be saved in healthcare costs by fluoridation, either.

Common Councillor John MacKenzie saying he's concerned by all the discussion of tooth decay, and maybe we should ask the province to examine any healthcare savings possible from adding fluoride. 


Common Councillor Greg Norton pointed out P3 would need to be notified if council has changed its mind--and besides, water is the responsibility of the municipality.
 

In the end, the motion was defeated with all but MacKenzie, Councillor Gerry Lowe, and Councillor Susan Fullerton voting against.

Update On Condition Of Boy Bitten By Dog

Rothesay Regional Police giving us an update on the 11 year old boy who was mauled last week by a dog in French Village. 

He required 11 stitches to his face and one of his arms as well as sustaining lacerations to his hip and back. Police telling CHSJ News he's doing well all things considered. 

The dog was seized by the SPCA.

A Logjam At Top Of Women's Curling Championship

At the Ford World Women's Curling Championship at Harbour Station, Canada defeating Scotland last night 8-3 to improve to 6 and 1. 

Canada, skipped by Rachel Homan, is tied with Sweden and Switzerland with four more round-robin games remaining. 

The Swiss lost their first match to South Korea 9-2 before winning over the U.S. 8-6 last night. 

This morning, Canada faces Germany at 9:30 and then South Korea this afternoon starting at 2:30.

Auger Repeats As MVP

Sebastien Auger is only the second player in Sea Dogs history to repeat as the Most Valuable Player.    He also picked up the Team Player award and the 3 Stars award.

He tells us the coaching staff build confidence in the players saying his goalie coach Jim Flemming is a great guy who helped work on the little things that made the difference in the end.

Jason Cameron repeated winning the Community Service Award and also picked up Academic player of the year.
He admits it's tough balancing hockey and the demands of university but he says you find for both and it pays off.

Fredericton's Oliver Cooper won the Top Scorer award and Fan's choice calling it honour to win.
Olivier Leblanc is the Top Defenseman, Thomas Chabot picked up Most Improved Player and Rookie of the Year went to Newfoundland's Nathan Noel.  

Chris Di Domenico is the other Sea Dog to repeat as MVP.
